This is Perth-born, Melbourne-based Brendan Brown's third exhibition at Ruck Rover's monthly Mini Art Mart and we're rather excited to have him back.
Brendan is renowned for creating works from unique and unusual materials. Check out some of the intricate combinations he's created for us before here!
This time Brendan's designed and crafted four works in watercolour painted onto coffee-stained paper adhered to foam board.
The designs themselves are inspired by vintage sailor tattoos, but with twist. Traditional ink designs for sea-faring fellas depict optimistic symbols of luck, of love and dreams of being 'homeward bound'. In his exhibition, Brendan plays with these icons and sneaks in less optimistic notes of loneliness, tricky sea creatures and troubled waters. All within the pallet and character of vintage nautical ink.
They are vividly colourful, beautiful works.
Each watercolour is available for purchase at $60.
Exhibition runs until November 30.

Brendan Brown
Exhibition runs 5-30 November
Brendan D Brown is a Perth born, Melbourne based, part time artist.
The works which are on display here are one-off scraperboard originals. The boards are manufactured in the UK through a process of coating thick card in a thin layer of China clay. The clay is then stained solid black with India Ink, which Brendan painstakingly scratches away at with a rusty, pointy nail to reveal, in white, the clay beneath. This takes f****ing ages. Sometimes, while making these pieces, Brendan's hand cramped up so badly that it took two cups of tea before his fingers could be fully straightened. Oh the humanity!
This is Brendan's second exhibition at Ruck Rover in as many years, something he is very proud of.

Brendan Brown
Drawing inspiration from religious art and tattoos, as well as anatomical, botanical and wildlife illustration, Brendan has been wandering the world drawing pictures for the best part of ten years.
This is the first time his work has been displayed, and this exhibition was primarily motivated by the fear of an impending 30th birthday.
For the collection, Brendan has sketched in pencil on hand pressed paper, then mounted the sketches in custom made frames, also made by him.
Prints are available of his large owl picture on acid free, textured card stock.
